Maharana Pratap Sagar

Maharana Pratap Sagar, commonly known as Pong Reservoir or Pong Dam Lake, is the highest earthfill dam in India on the Beas River in the wetland zone of the Shiwalik Hills of the Kangra District in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Named in the honor of the patriot Maharana Pratap, the reservoir or the lake is a well-known wildlife sanctuary and one of the 25 international wetland sites declared in India by the Ramsar Convention. The reservoir covers an area of 24,529 hectares and the wetlands portion is 15,662 hectares.

The Pong Reservoir and Gobindsagar Reservoir are the two most important fishing reservoirs in the Himalayan foothills of Himachal Pradesh. These reservoirs are the leading sources of fish within the Himalayan states. Located very close to Mukerian and Pathankot at the distance of around 33 km, it is also very close to Kangra Railway Line. In this way, one can easily reach there. It is at the distance of 110 km from Amritsar, 55 km from Dharmshala, 50 km from Kangra and 250 km from Chandigarh.

The pool tangential land area has diverse perpetual and deciduous pine forests on hills. Eucalyptus trees have also been full-fledged in the area. The woods growth endows with sufficient nourishment to the migratory birds. The tree types of the forest area are Acacia, Jamun, Shisham, Mango, Mulberry, Ficus, Kachanar, Amla and Prunus. A variety of shrubs, grasses and climbers have also been reported. The lake seasonal water-level dissimilarity between the maximum water level and the least amount draw-down level does not permit growth of much developing vegetation, but some amount of submerged vegetation has been noticed.

Upon arrival meet and drive for Maharana Pratap Sagar Dam in the evening and check in to hotel. Evening watching the birds from the roof top. Overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 02: ANGLING & BIRD WATCHING AT MAHARANA PRATAP SAGAR DAM
After morning breakfast spend your day angling the mahseer or watching the birds. The Pong Dam reservoir is an important wintering area for a large number of black headed Gulls, Brahminy ducks, Bar headed geese, Plovers, Grebes, Cormorants, Daters, Herons, Moorhens, Egrets and Storks etc. The first sighting of red necked Grebe in India was reported from the Pong dam Wetland. Overnight stay at Hotel.

Day 03: MAHARANA PRATAP SAGAR DAM TO CHANDIGARH
After breakfast check out from hotel and transfer to Chandigarh for your connecting train / flight for onward destination.
